Mauka – A Second Chance at Education

Mauka
Why Mauka Matters
- Education as a Gateway A secondary school certificate is the foundation for higher education, vocational training, and better employment. It is essential for economic independence and upward mobility.
- Bridging the Gender Gap Mauka aims to address the unique barriers that girls face in continuing their education, by offering local, safe, and supportive environments where learning can resume without stigma or pressure.
- Empowering Futures Beyond academics, the program fosters confidence, life skills, and long-term aspirations—empowering girls to reimagine their future with dignity and hope.

India has made significant progress in achieving universal enrollment at the primary level. However, this momentum often fades as children move into secondary grades. Girls, in particular, face greater challenges—dropping out of school at disproportionately higher rates due to early marriage, domestic responsibilities, and financial hardship.
According to the National Family Health Survey-5 (2019–21), these factors continue to widen the gender gap in education.
For many girls, once they leave school, returning becomes nearly impossible.
While open schooling options exist, barriers such as lack of awareness, accessibility issues, limited support, and social constraints make it difficult for dropouts—especially girls—to re-enter the system.
At BBIC Foundation, we recognize the power of education to transform lives. That’s why we launched Mauka — a dedicated initiative to provide adolescent girls and young women with a second chance to complete their secondary education, particularly Grade 10, through flexible and community-supported learning models.
