Buniyaad - Foundational Literacy & Numeracy (FLN)

More than 95% of children aged 6-14 in India are enrolled in schools. However, studies like ASER and other national surveys reveal a concerning gap: a significant proportion of these children complete primary school without acquiring the fundamental reading and arithmetic skills necessary to progress in their education. This leaves many students unable to meet the expectations of the next grade level and hampers their ability to benefit from further learning opportunities.
One of BBIC Foundation’s primary objectives is to enable these children to quickly and sustainably acquire basic reading and arithmetic skills so that they can fully benefit from further education and future opportunities.

Our Approach:
At BBIC Foundation, we have developed Buniyaad—a comprehensive and child-centered pedagogy designed to help children “catch up” and master foundational literacy and numeracy skills. Buniyaad is built on the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) approach, which focuses on tailoring learning activities to meet the specific needs and learning levels of each child.
The Buniyaad methodology is further strengthened through our partnership with DEVI Sansthan, who is our knowledge partner and has developed the ALFA pedagogy—Activities for Learning, Focused on Achievement. This pedagogy focuses on using interactive, child-centered activities that engage children in learning at their own pace. The combination of ALFA and Buniyaad ensures that children not only catch up on missed learning but also develop a love for learning that will stay with them for life.
The Buniyaad methodology emphasizes the importance of interactive, hands-on learning through a combination of activities. These activities are crafted to engage children and reinforce key skills in a way that is both enjoyable and educational. For example:
- Reading aloud
- Participating in discussions on what they have read or heard
- Working with phonetic charts
- Playing word games
- Expressing their thoughts both orally and in writing
Through Buniyaad, children engage in learning through large group activities, small group sessions, and one-on-one interactions. This multi-faceted approach ensures that children are not only able to read and do arithmetic but also develop a strong foundation for continued education.
Implementation of Buniyaad
BBIC Foundation’s foundational learning programs for children aged 6-14 are implemented through two key modes:
